BEYOND THE MIC: THE EXPERTS RECOMMEND.

Written by on August 30, 2023

Have you met someone trying to start out in the music industry and they think its all about being able to sing on a microphone or record in studio, and boom a hit, however this is not how it works?

We have hosted a number of artistes and celebrities on NRG Radio UG and they have shared some of the must haves and must dos as one plans to take on music as their career.

Spice Diana’s recommendation was team work. As an artiste, you need to have a strong and well-connected team that will help push your brand and your music on spotlights that will market it otherwise you might have the vocals and only your friends and village mates will know you.

Joahua Baraka recommended the same except sources close to him revealed that the advantage he had was he built a good relationship with DJs so on top of being exposed and being naturally talented, Joshua Baraka shared his song with many DJs and that’s how his song gained popularity.

The truth of the matter is that his jam was undeniably good.

Prim Asiimwe advised that if you want to make it, you have to look at music as a business not just music for you to sell otherwise, why would you go to the studio to sing? You have to know how to get down and do something that can be marketed, also you need relevant plugs in the industry.

Asiimwe also says as an artiste you need to know your strengths and capitalize on them. Singing is not the only thing that sales, stage performance can also sell you out. Your vocals may not be as perfect but when your performance is phenomenal.

Crysto Panda said as a beginning artiste, you need to first establish yourself first and have work of your own before you can do a collabo because if you do collabos as a beginning artiste, you will be seen as a back up singer and the audience will always see the celebrity and not you.

Where as some people think that relatability is a must have, Prim believes that its not necessary because there are artistes who have released music that is not relatable to the season but yet their music is timeless. Regardless of the season, people will still show up and enjoy your music. In other words, you can be the kind of artiste whose music never leaves the play list.

At any given time, a chorus or a verse will be dropped in the middle of a new trend.

Vyper Ranking said that in his experience, there people who are really talented and all they need is guidance and polishing of skill. They are naturally talented but they just need to be pushed and guided to make their talent sellable. He said don’t you ever give up on your dream, as long as you know that you have the talent, keep pushing and be open to anyone who wants to work with you. Learn and grow.

Wonder JR also a fresh talent in the industry and a content creator revealed that in order to be sellable, you must know the audience you are creating music for. He said, “when I was starting out in terms of music, I had come with some crazy work way too professional and too complex and then I relized Uganda is an audience that loves good things that are not too serious and secondly, they joke about everything. I had to refine my music and make it the kind that is consumable for the Ugandan market which later inspired my tune “Pary Yani”.

He basically said your audience matters.
