In a tale of unwavering courage and community solidarity, beloved Ugandan musician Evelyn Lagu, known for her enchanting voice and indomitable spirit, bid farewell to the world after a long-fought battle against kidney disease. Her journey was one of both hope and despair, marked by the unyielding support of a music industry that rallied around her.
The whispers of Evelyn’s illness first surfaced in 2018, setting off a wave of concern among the top celebrated artistes in Uganda including Eddy Kenzo, Spice Diana among others. A collective plea for support echoed through the industry, her son Freddie Kasavu offered to donate to her his kidney. Which many critiques including Freddie’s Father criticized saying Evelyn Lagu is going to die anyways so it is pointless to have 2 sick people in the family.
Her hopes must have been shuttered when Evelyn Lagu got stack in Turkey when she couldn’t get the surgery as the medical bill was extremely high and she still had a huge balance she couldn’t cover, besides that, rumor has it that she was denied surgery because her donor was under age and the Father did not approve of this.
Inside sources also revealed that her condition was so bad that not even a new Kidney would save her and this left her in a position where she needed dialysis, a very expensive treatment she had to receive on a daily basis to survive.
The music community rallied again, Concerts were staged, millions were donated, and even car washes became beacons of support. Music promoters extended lifelines by offering opportunities for Evelyn to perform, the proceeds of which helped cushion the weight of medical bills and specialized care.
Last year, a concert organized by Evelyn met an untimely demise at the hands of fiscal constraints. Authorities declined and prohibited the event from happening due to the high taxes that were pending from the management of the venue. This left Evelyn Lagu in a hopeless position and on that day, she collapsed and was admitted to hospital making her condition worse.
In 0ne of her last Television interview, she revealed that her fear of death had transformed into a profound acceptance. “I achieved what I wanted,” she said, her voice tinged with a quiet triumph. “I built a home for my children, and my heart found peace.”
Today, we mourn the loss of a woman whose spirit transcended the confines of her illness. Evelyn Lagu’s legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those who witnessed her valiant fight. Her story serves as a stark reminder that behind the glitz and glamour of the entertainment world, there are battles waged, and souls who rise above adversity.
Very few women would choose to work in such a condition to cater for their medical bills, many will rely on donations until there are no more donations, others would give up but Evelyn Lagu fought until her last breath.
Evelyn Lagu’s departure leaves a void, but her strength, her music, and her indomitable spirit will forever echo in the melodies of our hearts.
