A LEVEL STUDENTS TO DO 2 SUBJECTS INSTEAD OF 3 IN NEW CURRICULUM

Written by on April 18, 2023

There have been new developments in Uganda’s A level curriculum, students will be doing only 2 principle subjects as opposed to three. This is aimed at helping students concentrate and build expertise in specific fields so that their careers are built from an earlier stage.

Dr. Richard Irumba the Deputy Director of Research, Consultancy, and Library Services at National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) said ” If a student is interested in human health, there is no reason for them to do physics and chemistry, because when it comes to human health the two are not needed, however, you find a student focusing all their energy to ensure they pass physics and chemistry and fail at the most important subjects that are essential to human health.”

He also explained that the purpose of this curriculum is to help students concentrate on subjects that they need to be admitted in the profession of their choice.

This was highly received by chairperson of the National Private Education Institution Association (NPEIA), Mr Hasadu Kirabira, He adds that this was long over due however it will create a big gap for career guidance because once a career path is chosen, there is no turning back.

The pioneer students of this curriculum will be joining A level in 2024 and the curriculum will cost about UGX 100Million.

Dr. Irumba however highlights that if Government delays to approve and release funds for this curriculum as soon as possible, it will become challenging because 0-level students can not just transition from a competence-based curriculum to a knowledge-based curriculum. “It will be a disaster.” he said.

What would you make of these developments in the education curriculum for A – Level students.
