HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE LION OF BUGANDA
Written by Imran Kaaya on April 13, 2023
Born on 13th April 2023, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi is the most influential figure in the Buganda Kingdom. He was crowned on the 31st July 1993 in a ceremony at Buddo.
In 1966, at the age of 11, the young royal was named as the Heir Apparent and upon the death of his father in 1969, he assumed the role of Head of the Royal House of Buganda.
After the abolishment of kingdoms by President Milton Obote in 1967, the Kabaka was sent to exile in the UK. From here, he attended Magdelene College, Cambridge. The Kabaka was in exile until 1988 when Obote was overthrown and just a few years later in 1995, the kingdom was officially restored.
For the first time in over 20years, Buganda finally had her Kabaka back and the kingdom was elated.
In 1999, the Kabaka gave his subjects even more to celebrate as he wed Sylvia Nagginda at a ceremony at Saint Paul’s Cathedral in Namirembe.
The Kabaka has 5 children with his first born Prince Suuna born in the UK in 1986 and his last born Omulangira Ssemakookiro.
In recent years however, the Kabaka has had health complications that have made him a rare sight in the kingdom. Over the Easter Holiday, he was spotted at Equatorial Hotel with events organiser, Balaam Barugahara.
