Shazam! Fury of the Gods review: A predictable funny snooze-fest

.Zachary Levi is back as the bright red superhero Shazam in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, an uninspired movie that leaves the fate of the franchise hanging. In 2019, fans were introduced to Billy Batson or more commonly known as Shazam in one of the few movies that actually exceeded people’s expectations of what a DC movie could be. The same can not be said for the sequel however as it currently sits with a 45% Rotten Tomatoes score, a far cry from its predecessor’s 90% rating.
In the sequel, Shazam and his family of superheroes have to go up against two Greek goddesses, the daughters of Atlas: Hespera, and Kalypso as they want absolute control over the planet. Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu take on the roles of Hespera and Kalypso with such poise and ease that you start rooting for them and not the heroes. That is one of the major issues affecting Shazam, as the efforts of the heroes are downplayed and although we all love some good quibbling, it comes off wrong in certain parts of the movie sucking you out of the movie and just cringing.
Djimon Hounsou is one of the standout highlights in this movie as he is given a much larger role to play compared to his previous appearances and you can actually see him have fun portraying the ancient wizard.
Shazam 2 does not do much to break the superhero trope but it does a good job of producing something that is digestible but still lacks an identity and struggles from superhero movie fatigue.
