THE BEST VR HEADSETS AT THE MOMENT

Written by on March 16, 2023

Virtual Reality has come a long way from the Sensorama in the 1950s to become a multi-billion-dollar industry that has revolutionized the world and literally changed the way we live and work. It is much more than just a gaming system but can be used for medical purposes, interior designing, architecture, and holding virtual meetings. With the rise in popularity of the “metaverse”  here are some of the best VR headsets on the market.

Meta Quest 2

After acquiring Oculus in 2014, Facebook, now Meta, announced its intent to explore and invest highly in the virtual reality industry. The culmination of this investment is the Meta Quest 2, a VR headset that is a demon in white. With 6DOF tracking, the headset can track your head movement giving you the freedom to interact wholly in the VR atmosphere. With 3D sound and over 256GB of storage, the Meta Quest 2 will knock you back at about $399.99.

PlayStation VR 2

Sony heard the complaints made over their first VR headset and released the PlayStation VR 2, a headset that not only feels like an otherworldly experience but is also designed to ease your gaming. Dual 2K OLED HDR displays are provided, giving you access to 4K-quality content. It also has some genuinely innovative and exciting elements, like headset haptics and eye tracking making it more immersive. And the best part is that the PS VR2 doesn’t require an expensive gaming PC; all you need is a PlayStation 5 to enjoy high-quality virtual reality. Priced at $550, the PlayStation VR 2 is more expensive than an actual PS5 but still very affordable for a VR headset.

HP Reverb G2

In terms of consumer VR, the HP Reverb G2 offers the greatest level of image clarity. Without a question, it’s the best choice for avid gamers. (or fans of VR racing sims). Although it’s designed to work with Microsoft Windows mixed reality, it chooses to enter the Steam VR market and is also compatible with that software and games. Inside-out tracking additionally removes the requirement for mounting exterior cameras or base stations, enabling HP to charge significantly less while still making setup easy. The result is a VR headset that enables you to relax while taking part in your favorite adventures.

VALVE INDEX

In terms of specs, the Valve Index might be the most lacking compared to other systems on the market but it makes up for it in terms of screen size. You get a 130-degree field of view but you have to sacrifice a few pixels but like Thanos said, “ A small price to pay…”. But Valve has another secret weapon that makes it easier to swallow the $999 price tag and that is the controllers. Some of the best and most responsive controllers on the market not only feel good but also elevate your overall gaming experience.

Another inconvenience is that the Index requires two sensors, one each in the two opposing corners of the room. It is obviously wired to your computer but the clunkiness is made up for by the faster refresh rate and more accurate tracking.
