WHY AVATAR WON “BEST VISUAL EFFECTS” IN THE OSCARS

Written by on March 13, 2023

Avatar is one of the most original pieces of work in the world. The very first aspect that makes this movie is the use of creatures that are unique but then are bringing out the human nature.

Designing such creatures and being consistent with their story takes a lot and perhaps this made it a requirement to have a vast collection of visual effects in order to make the story much more relatable to human beings.

The technology in Avatar was innovated by James Cameron who has built a career and reputation in innovating technology in movies. Cameron used a combination of 3D and CGI which he combined with real footage to capture motion.

It took almost a year for the expert team to make the images more real and to ensure that it doesn’t turn out like an animation. They took time paying attention to every single image, be it a tree or a rock and turning it into a real image which were rendered individually using the most innovative techniques.

The actors and actresses shot the scenes while wearing a camera rig on their head. The rig was used to take digital shots of their faces. These digital shots provided full and accurate movement of facial features for those characters that were generated by computers.

Cameron used a camera system using 3D fusion.  He is the one that introduced this system in 2003 in the movie “Ghost of the Abyss” and it had been used by several other directors to give their productions a unique touch.

When it comes to Avatar, Cameron used it in a number of creative ways to bring out the movie as perfect as it turned out to be.

With this level of creativity and innovation it’s no wonder that Avatar won the Oscars Award of Best Visual Effects.
